Selective Pasts

The House of Why Posted on September 30, 2013 by EileenSeptember 30, 2013

Why do some memories become hazy while others stay vivid? I’m sure we’ve all had our share of good times and experiences that bring smiles to our faces when we recall them, but let’s (not) forget all those other wonderful moments that deserve to be in the Amnesia Hall of Fame–celebrating your 16th birthday in a convent, wearing a strapless dress two sizes too small in a high school play, and expelling gas loudly in the middle of math class … Continue reading →

Samaritans: An Endangered Species

The House of Why Posted on September 23, 2013 by EileenSeptember 23, 2013

Why don’t more people offer help to others? Not very long ago I had a bad case of food poisoning.  Maybe at one time or another you’ve been in the same unfortunate position, dealing with diarrhea and nausea simultaneously.  If I wasn’t sitting on the toilet, I was vomiting into it (I apologize for the graphic details).  My activities left me weak and dripping with a cold sweat.  I had ringing in my ears and my head was spinning.  To … Continue reading →

(Not) So Electrifying

The House of Why Posted on August 30, 2013 by EileenAugust 30, 2013

Why can’t we sometimes be less dependent on electricity? Last weekend a storm struck the Inland Northwest so hard that some areas, including mine, had their electric knocked out and were left in darkness.  It happened around 8:30 in the evening when most people were home relaxing and getting ready to start a new week. It wasn’t so bad being without electric at first.  I got out the candles so we could have some light.  Then it hit me–I had … Continue reading →

Being Sensitive to the Sensitive

The House of Why Posted on August 21, 2013 by EileenAugust 21, 2013 2

Why isn’t the condition of the Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) more publicized? Nowadays, we’re thankfully more aware of people with different ailments and conditions that once went unrecognized and were quickly dismissed.  Kids who couldn’t concentrate in school were considered to be disruptive troublemakers; now we know that Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are real conditions.  Older people who were extremely forgetful just couldn’t remember things because of their advanced age; today we understand that … Continue reading →

Happy Second of July, America!

The House of Why Posted on July 2, 2013 by EileenJuly 2, 2013

Why do we often call Independence Day the Fourth of July instead? With those of us in the United States about to celebrate our national holiday, my fiancé came up with this good holiday-related “why.”  Although the official name of the holiday is “Independence Day,” most of us commonly call it by its more popular name, the “Fourth of July” or simply “The Fourth.”  What’s with that? Technically, America’s independence from Great Britain in 1776, the reason Americans celebrate the … Continue reading →
