In Their Shoes

The House of Why Posted on April 14, 2013 by EileenApril 14, 2013 2

Why are we afraid or uncomfortable around people who are different from us? I read an article on CNN.com this morning about a 31-year old woman who was born with a condition that made her face malformed, and despite numerous surgeries to correct her face, she still doesn’t look like everyone else.  When she was a child, she was taunted and isolated by other kids who thought she was a freak, and now as an adult, she considers it a … Continue reading →

Doing (Chow) Time

The House of Why Posted on March 19, 2013 by EileenMarch 19, 2013

Why the fascination with a death row inmate’s last meal? The death penalty has been a subject of hot debate in the United States with supporters and protesters adamant in their views on the subject.  You would think the two sides couldn’t be further apart from each other, but there’s one thing they both scrutinize–the death row inmate’s last days and, in particular, the inmate’s last meal. I don’t think any meal is given so much attention as the last … Continue reading →

Hail to the Brief

The House of Why Posted on November 6, 2012 by EileenNovember 6, 2012

Why does campaigning for U.S. elections last about 2 years? Finally.  It’s here.  Election Day in the U.S.  Rah, rah, sis, boom, bah.  I’m so excited.  Uh, huh.  Aren’t you?  After all, we’ve only heard the politicians, especially those running for president, for the last 2 years.  And it’s estimated that the politicians have spent around 6 billion dollars on their campaigns.  6 billion!  This year’s November elections are the costliest ever. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think … Continue reading →

Dying for a Living

The House of Why Posted on July 9, 2012 by EileenJuly 9, 2012

Why do dead celebrities need to make a living? Nowadays with hard economic times that are hitting the U.S. as well as the world, it’s difficult for people to find jobs or keep them, if they’re lucky enough to already have jobs.  What I find amazing is that some dead celebrities are making oodles of cash while living shmoes are struggling just to put bread on their tables, even going into debt to do so.  There’s something wrong with this. … Continue reading →

Pledge to Pledge

The House of Why Posted on July 3, 2012 by EileenJuly 3, 2012 1

Since the 4th of July holiday is upon those of us who are in the U.S., I thought it would be fitting to write a post with a patriotic theme.  Aside from the fireworks and barbeques, there are other things we do as Americans to honor our country, such as singing the national anthem and saying the Pledge of Allegiance. I don’t know about the rest of you, but as a kid growing up in New York, I had to … Continue reading →
