Fondue Frustration

The House of Why Posted on December 10, 2013 by EileenDecember 10, 2013

Why are so many people fond of fondue? My husband and I have heard about it and were curious.  We never did it before, but heard how good it was, especially from other couples who did it.  So we thought we’d give it a try, even though we felt out of our element and didn’t really know how to do it.  Hopefully, our inexperience wouldn’t embarrass us.  You know what I’m talking about, don’t you?  The “it” is fondue. When … Continue reading →

Bursting the Gobble

The House of Why Posted on November 25, 2013 by EileenNovember 25, 2013 3

Why do Americans bother with Thanksgiving? The American holiday of Thanksgiving is about to take place, one which began with the pilgrims and Indians sharing a feast to give thanks for a good harvest.  As time progressed and we moved away from an agrarian-based economy, the holiday became a day of giving thanks for the blessings in our lives and spending time with our families.  And now Thanksgiving has evolved yet again–it’s become more of a “shopping holiday” with people … Continue reading →

Driven Down

The House of Why Posted on November 18, 2013 by EileenNovember 18, 2013

Why are motor vehicle bureaus located in the seediest parts of town? After getting married not too long ago, I’m going through the oh-so-fun process of changing my last name to my husband’s name.  Social Security, banks, credit cards, doctors’ offices, etc., etc.  While I was waiting in line to update the name on my driver’s license, it struck me that no matter which state I’ve lived in, motor vehicle bureaus tend to be located in the worst parts of … Continue reading →

Marking a Milestone

The House of Why Posted on November 11, 2013 by EileenNovember 11, 2013

Why is the 40th birthday a big one for women? If we’re fortunate enough to do so, we’ll eventually reach the age of 40.  It’s inevitable.  Time keeps moving on and doesn’t wait for anyone, male or female.  Somehow, though, the Big 4-0 seems to be a bigger milestone for women than it is for men, who stereotypically get more distinguished with their wrinkles and grey hair in comparison to women, who just get old. My 40th birthday is just … Continue reading →

Express Season

The House of Why Posted on November 4, 2013 by EileenNovember 8, 2013

Why does fall feel like the shortest season? About two weeks ago, my husband and I rode our bikes for several miles on the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes in Idaho.  We started our ride in the small, quaint town of Harrison and pedaled south on the trail that followed the lake’s edge.  It was an absolutely perfect fall day, one in which nature was displayed at its finest.  The lake was calm and smooth as a mirror, and the … Continue reading →
